The condition known as “hemispatial neglect” causes people to only see/experience/feel one side of their body and one side of the world. This condition can also make people only apply makeup to one side of their face.
It can sometimes cause delusions wherein people...
Some lizards remove their tails when attacked by predators.
When attacked, the lizards detach their tails and run off. The predator feasts on the lizard tail, and the lizard escapes and grows a new tail.
This is a trait that appears in several lizard species. This defense mechanism appears in lizard populations that come into contact with poisonous vipers.
Losing ones tail impairs growth and...
The day after US Air Flight 1549 landed safely in the Hudson, so many people played the number 1549 in the lottery that some states shut their lotteries down out of fear that if the number hit, they would lose millions.
Lotteries have a “liability level”, a limit to how much the lottery can give away. If the amount of money that the lottery would give away for a certain number hits...

Every year, a rumor goes around the internet that some time in August will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to see Mars, because it will look as big in our sky as the moon.
Why do we see this rumor every year, often in the same time of the year?
August 27, 2003 was when Mars was the closest to our planet that it has ever been in over 50,000 years (35 million miles away, about 144 times as...

Grigori Rasputin had to be poisoned, shot several times, clubbed and then tossed into a frozen river before he was killed.
When he was found, his autopsy showed that he had died of hypothermia, despite the fact that he was found with a bullet hole in his forehead. Also, despite having consumed enough cyanide to kill several men, the autopsy showed no traces of poison.

The stabbing sound the knife makes in the famous shower scene in Psycho is in fact the sound of a knife stabbing a melon.
And the blood in that scene was actually chocolate syrup! (Remember: it’s a black and white movie)
It took 7 days to shoot this scene, yet the scene itself is only 45 seconds long.

Even though Ninjas in popular culture wear black, there’s no evidence that historical ninjas ever did.
It was more likely that ninjas would disguise themselves as civilians so that they could blend in with crowds. Since ninjas were supposed to be stealthy, early drawings of ninjas show them in black to convey a sense of invisibility.

In the 1950s, the United States planned to drop a nuclear bomb on the moon.
At the time, the US was lagging behind the Soviet Union in the space race (For example, they sent a man into space before the US did.) Exploding a nuclear weapon on the moon was a way to one-up the Soviet Union. They planned on nuking the moon as a PR stunt, and they wanted to make sure the explosion could be seen from...
Our sun is so big that 1 million earths could fit inside of it. On the other hand, the largest star known to man is called VY Canis Majoris which could house 9,261,000,000 Suns.
If VY Canis Majoris were put in our sun’s place it would extend past Saturn. VY Canis Majoris can also fit 7×10^15 Earths inside of it (that’s 7 with 15 zeros after it.)

if you lived on Little Diomede Island in Alaska. You could shoot a long range .408 Chey Tac sniper rifle to Big Diomede Island in Russia, just 2.4 miles away. In England the dates between the 2nd and 14th of September, 1752 did NOT exist!
After an act of Parliament in 1750, England and its colonies had to change calendars. England was using the Julian calendar which was 11 days behind the Gregorian calendar used in the rest of Europe. To do this, they skipped September 3rd-September 13th.
In the Julian Calendar, New Years was on March 25. So...

The Bible never said there were 3 wise men. The number could have been anything (perhaps HUNDREDS!)
The idea that there were 3 wise men probably comes from the fact that the Gospel of Matthew mentions that the wise men or Magi brought 3 gifts to Jesus.
In fact, the Gospel of Matthew is the only book in the Bible that has any wise men at all. The Gospel of Luke has shepherds visiting baby...
Coca Cola was NEVER green
Contrary to internet lore, Coca-Cola has always been brown. The original Coca-Cola formula contained caramel, which gave it its distinct brown color.
The brown color was important for the purpose of hiding imperfections. With modern production, that’s less of an issue, but it’s still naturally brown in keeping with tradition.

After seeing a girl have her father daughter dance in a movie, I ran to my room and cried because I don’t have a dad. My little brother came into my room.
He told me he’d love to walk me down the altar and give me a father daughter dance at my wedding. His LGMH.
My boyfriend is a quiet guy and never really expresses any emotion. Today, I was at his house and we were doing homework. I grabbed his notebook to get something. About 5 pages into it, a list that continued on for 12 pages front and back had all the reasons he loves me. My boyfriend’s quiet LGMH.
When I was about 6, the boy I was going out with asked me to marry him. I said no, we’re too young. But he pinky promised he’d ask me again when we were old enough.
20 years later he came up to me and linked my pinky to his. He asked me to marry him. Jay, your pinky promises and LGMH.
Yesterday I went to a play. A couple was sitting in front of me when I saw the man doing the ‘yawning around the shoulder thing.’
They were close to 80 years old.
Young love that never dies GMH.
I went to my room feeling down. My sister sat with me and asked what was wrong while playing with my label maker. I told her that I thought nobody loved me and then added not to waste the labels.
She printed a label anyway, stuck it on my head, said, “I didn’t waste it”, and left.
I looked in the mirror. The label said ‘I love you’.
I was talking to my boyfriend about New Years Eve kisses. I had never experienced one. I went back to my home town for Christmas holidays, 3 hours away. During the next week I got sick with mono.
He drove down on New Years to give me my kiss at midnight even though I was sick. Chris, your LGMH
Today during my clinicals in a nursing home, I saw an elderly couple in the dementia unit. They live together with their beds pushed together. They have been married over 50 years.
It was like The Notebook in real life… their love and devotion to each other after so many years, and going through so much, gives me hope.
Today my mom and i were driving back from work. I looked on the sidewalk and saw an elderly man in a wheelchair, another elderly woman, and a nurse.
The elderly woman was the one pushing the man’s wheelchair. I saw her refuse to let the nurse do it.
Love that refuses to give up and refusal to stop showing that love GMH.
My parents kicked me out of the house last week, because I’m gay. Today, my sister came and found me. She said she left the house, too. Why? Because my parents couldn’t accept me. My sister’s love and acceptance gives me hope.
I’ve had Alopecia Universis since I was ten years old. I had gotten a wig to wear in public. A few days before a family party I ripped it and was nervous about going to the party.
When my 4 year old cousin said she wished she had magic hair that could come and go, I almost cried. Her innocent love GMH even today.
French may be the language of love, but that’s not what makes it a “Romance language”. Here’s what does:
The Romance languages (e.g. Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, Romanian) all began as dialects of Latin. Latin was the language of the Roman Empire (hence, Romance).
You’ll notice that the Romance languages have a lot of similar words. This is because they...
